A patient in his late 50s came into my office recently with a chronic cough for over a year. He presented with classic signs of post-nasal drip from sinus issues, which irritated his throat and caused repeated coughing spells. As we delved into his health picture, he also described hay fever and a downward trend in his health after a winter infection affecting his ear, eyes and sinuses. His sinuses weren’t improving, and boy was he suffering with the recent spring bloom. He was tired and wanted relief. He also described acid reflux in recent years somewhat relieved by Omeprazole, a typical anti-acid medication. I believe this was contributing to his coughing spells, as his body was unable to cough the esophagus, but tried to relieve the irritation. At this point I began to get excited for him, because what he described is quite readily and effectively treated with natural medicine.
Symptomatic relief of allergies including my recent patient, is usually a simple matter of relieving the load on the mucus membranes and calming the immune system allergic response with natural antihistamines via herbs and vitamins. People usually experience relief within days.
What can be much more challenging is to identify those “obstacles to cure,” which may be bringing the immune system down and blocking a fundamental restoration of health. In the case of my recent patient, I discovered two mercury amalgam fillings, which are 50% mercury by weight, and continually release mercury with every stimulation, including chewing, drinking hot or cold beverages, brushing, grinding, and especially dental drilling. This has been well documented through the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (www.iaomt.org). Because the primary effects of mercury are on the immune and nervous systems, and because the proximity to the sinuses is so close, people often experience dramatic if not complete relief with slow and proper removal of these mercury amalgams, to reduce the amount of mercury released into the system with each dental procedure. Another example of an obstacle can be food allergies causing chronic sinus inflammation, a classic example being conventional dairy. Mercury levels or food allergies are easily testable in my office via a blood draw.
The big picture key is to remove these obstacles, treating the cause of your allergic response over time. This results in a re-establishment of your health foundation. This is the goal of my practice, so you experience greater health over time, with fewer challenges to this improved vitality.
